good evening. i'm dan ashley. legal trouble tonight for san francisco's fire chief. she reportedly owes her ex-husband tens of thousands of dollars in spousal support but jo ann hayes white say there's is a reason she stopped paying. caroline tyler has the story.

>> reporter: jo ann hayes white says she is trying to take the high road. this after a report reveals she 'oles her ex-husband thousands of dollars in support. shthis is white and then husbad 2004 when she was white appointed fire chief. are they divorced in 2009. white admits she recently stopped paying alimony after her ex-choked one of their three sons. he has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of putting a child at risk. white did not want to speak on camera today saying it is not in the best interest of my boys. tom o'connor is head of the firefighters union. >> there is a matter where the children of a public official to so this situation should be kept out of the paper and the mi should be allowed to heal. >> the mayor says he has confidence in the chief and considers her a good lead. we have to to figure out

what is going on and what the court letts say about it. there has been no judgment call on her yet and we will work with her to see what it is that the courts require her to do. >> reporter: the latest family discord has political insiders remembering a 2005 incident in why the chief's husband called 911 accusing her of hitting him in the head with a beer glass. he quickly recanted and no charges were filed but supporters of embattled sheriff brought thanes dent up when they protested outside some of his domestic violence court hearings alleging a double standard. the d.a. said today the cases are very different. particular case the the ex-husband recanted the story. we have two witnesses in our case, a videotape and e-mails and text messages. >> reporter: as for the alimony battle hayes white supporters

include the san francisco police chief who has known the family for years. >> i love the chief and i love her kids. i know them well and i know her husband well. the whole situation is sad. >> shawn white's attorney said he is pleased that the alimony will resume but says the chief owes about 14 months worth of spousal support. that could amount to about $40,000. they plan to go after this as well. in san francisco, caroline tyler, abc 7 news. a stockton man is in jail for refusing tuberculosis treatment. he was arrested yesterday. prosecutors say he is not complying with the health department order to stay home and take his medication. prosecutors believe rodriguez is refusing treatments because he wants to keep taking illegal drugs. >> the tb ms do not work well with street drugs at all. if you are heroin addict you can't get high so you have to

make choices. it is a matter of priorities. i don't know which drug this man is using. reportedly methamphetamine and may be alcohol issues. >> rodriguez was diagnosed last month and health department officials say he became impossible to find for treatments and because t.b. is so contagious he was arrested. a 25-year-old san jose man found alive one week after wrecking his pickup truck. he was found near highway 101 in a wooded area not visible to the roadway. he was reported missing when did not turn up for a funeral last friday he was scheduled to attend. we will have more on this story including an interview with his family on abc 7 news at 11:00 over on channel 7. demonstrators tried a new tactic today to let uc regents know they are not happy at all about another potential tuition hike. this is the first of three

meetings about the tuition hike. >> i sentence you to prison of debt. >> reporter: what began as a quiet uc regents meeting was interrupted by a couple dozen protesters dressed in orange uniforms to demonstrate how they feel imprisoned by debt trying to keep up with tuition hikes snow and ice working on the chain gang ♪ >> the board decided to take up the closed agenda items at an undisclosed location. another 6% tuition hike son table, bringing rates to nearly $13,000 a year, double what it was five years ago. >> we need to push harder and say we have got to re-fund education and make the 1% pay to roll back fee hikes. >> uc says the meeting is in

sacramento to ask lawmakers for more money. >> we still have hope to get the legislature and governor to agree to come up with the $125 million we need so there would not have to be a tuition increase. >> reporter: protesters are also upset more noncalifornians are being admitted to uc. their tuition is even more than michael rubioents. introduced a constitutional amendment to limit enrollment from outside california to just 10% on each campus. about one third at competitive schools like berkeley and ucla. >> we want to make sure that our kids have a chance to go to the flagship best universities that the state has to offer and right now the current system puts them in the back of the line and this is not fair. >> since they pay full freight they do fund in a way californian students.

>> as cesar pizano and his mom just want opportunities to make their lives better. >> now, they are saying that if you don't have money you are not going to get to the university. >> reporter: the regents will probably vote on the tuition hike in july when they know ouch the state budget will get schools. senator rubio hopes to get the tuition cap on the ballot. the new uc san diego chancellor will be making 5% more than the last one. in sacramento, nannette miranda abc 7 news. 23-year-old daniel dewitt was being transferred from the alameda county medical center psychiatric unit to napa state hospital when attacked a deputy, breaking his jaw. he is charged with murdering a man outside his berkeley hills home. he is a diagnosed paranoid

schizophrenic and mentally incompetent to stand trial. late today the federal drug enforcement agency administration said it rounded up 19 suspects in a day long marijuana roundup. they are calling it operation disco dazed. they found 14 indoor growing operatns, confiscated 3600 plants and 96-pounds of processed marijuana valued at more than a million dollars on the streets. 36 weapons and a grenade launcher, a vehicle, five boats and $400,000 in cash. the investigation began last year when they started looking into truck trafficking at a business called grower's choice hydroponics in hayward and tracy. in you have been diligently working to raise your leveled good cholesterol you might be wasting your time.

the next step in fitness foot wear. >> despite what skechers says in its ads, are the government says the shoes do not help you tone up or are lose weight. they agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges of false advertising. the money will go to those who bought the product. the financial meltdown at jp morgan chase appears to be worse than first reported. trading losses reached at least $3 billion. last week the nation's largest bank disclosed it had run up $2 billion in losses over just six weeks. the chief executive admitd that the bank simply took too much risk. federal regulators intend to crack down on any one caught pointing a laser into an airplane cockpit. it is a problem getting worse. so the faa wants to send a strong message. don't. karina rusk has the story from one bay area trouble spot.

roadways around the bay area as well as my wind shield. a look at today's high temperatures. warm to hot in some inland locations but cool on the coast. high of only 55 at half moon bay today with the low clouds and fog along the coastline. 54 san francisco. inland, 90 at ukiah. 86 antioch. 84 gilroy. most inland locations highs only in the 70s. on we go to current conditions. temperatures generally in the 50s. 51 san francisco. 50 half moon bay but 60 degrees in concord and 73 in antioch. the highlights are these. low clouds and fog and spotty drizzle tonight. and overnight. clearing and breezy tomorrow afternoon and whether will be turning mild for the weekend. but we have to wait for that to happen because cool weather is in now and it will be here for at least one more day. satellite and radar composite image shows a cool pattern continuing through thursday with the spool of cool air dipping down with the jetstream and giving us a nice onshore

people who point them into airplane cockpits. it has become a big problem. >> reporter: are pilots flying into san jose international airport faced an increased threat from the ground. someone pointing a laser into the cockpit. the problem worries both federal regulators and passengers. >> i think it is a serious issue. they don't respect putting the people who are on the plane in danger. >> the justice department and federal aviation administration are fed up with people who may not be terrorists but whose actions can temporarily blind a pilot. >> there are tough penalties and we would do all that we could to make sure that people understand that there are serious consequences to shining a laser at a pilot. >> reporter: the aggressive crackdown comes as a number of laser pointing incidents is on the rise. last year, pilots nationwide reported nearly 3600 hits, more than double the number just two years earlier.

>> i wasn't aware there were that many of them. i infrequently hear of them but didn't realize it was that chronic of a problem. >> san jose had 53 laser incidents last year while oakland and sfo report 31 each. airport administrator hes say there are a couple of reasons san jose flights are frequent target. >> flight patterns over a long stretch of residential neighborhoods. and just the fact that we are a very high tech gadget friendly culture. >> the people responsible are most often caught when they point the laser at a law enforcement aircraft. there was both an incident and arrest in 2009 involving the contra costa sheriff's helicopter. frequent flyers say any one caught should be prosecuted. >> i think they crack be down in any way they need to, to reduce the hazard. >> and people caught cannot only face jail time but also criminal and civil fines and

process of diagnosing autism. the top experts in the nation say they have broken new ground there is a simple way to spot a red flag in children as young as six months. here is dr. richard bess. babies can tell you a lot without speaking a word. benjamin is six months old. i will do the head light test. his head comes up with his body. that is normal for his age. this is head lag. and today the startling news. at six months it could be the earliest possible sign of autism. that is ben jason in research video. pediatricians have known head lag could be a sign of developmental delays but today's study is the first to link it to autism. because early intervention is key doctors say it could make a

disoriented. separating mothers from its young. shell claims the population of another whale the bow head has grown despite drilling in their feeding grounds. but it is not just the noise environmentalists are worried about. some say shell is not prepared if the unthinkable were to happen again. >> if you look at what happened in the gulf of mexico, we weren't prepared to clean that up in pristine perfect conditions. it is a little unreasonable to think that we will be prepared to clean up an oil spill in the arctic and obviously shell has insurmountable resources to do this work and we would like them to step up and take responsibility. >> reporter: shell says it has taken responsibility. engineering a containment system like the one used in the gulf oil spill adding in a statement it also assembled an oil spill response fleet that is second to none in the world. environmentalists remain skeptical and hope to generate
